A Review about the movie “Raise Your Voice” Essay

This is about a young woman named, Terri Fletcher (Hillary Duff), who’s fond of singing to herself, but never in public. She is always afraid to raise her voice to the world. However, she and her brother, Paul Fletcher (Jason Ritter), is sharing the same dream, for Terri to be a famous and successful artist, so he secretly captured her talent and then sent it to California’s most famous music school. Paul was very excited about the application that he asked Terri to go and sneak with him to see a concert. On the way home, a truck hit them that killed Paul. Terri became very traumatic about it, especially when seeing a light ray; it reminds her of her brother’s death. She became very depressed about the incident that she blames herself of it. Until they received a letter from her dream school, saying that she was admitted and that, the school has offered her a spot to the following school year. Even though it’s her dream school and that every aspiring artist would die to be admitted to this school, she has no plan of accepting their offer, for she’s thinking that by accepting the offer could also mean that she’s betraying her brother to leave him alone, not knowing that her brother sent the application himself. But her parents told her that this could also be a good opportunity for her to take a break after everything that has happened. By pursuing her and her brother’s dream could also give her a way to be far from home, far from traumatic memories of her brother, to be freed from her guilt. She then, accepted the offer and went to California. She didn’t know what’s awaiting there for her but she’s hoping that somehow her brother will help her pursue their dreams. She brought nothing but her talent and her inspiration with her. She feels so alone, until she met Jay Corgan (Oliver James). He is also a student in California Music High School; he’s the first to approach Terri and helped her fix her arrangements in the school. She’s lucky to readily find a friend in a foreign place. He helped her in all things and together, they faced the challenges encountered. But, there came the time that she fail to meet her professors’ expectations and that she became hopeless of trying to do so. Then, her professor showed her something to cheer her up. It’s her brother’s video of her singing, supporting and cheering for her. She then, felt the tears in her eyes, and finally knew that it’s all because of her brother that everything came to pass, that she’s about to reach their dream. And that, her brother only wants the best for her. She’s lifted from her burdens and felt her brother’s love for her. From then on, she did her best to make up for her brother and that her brother’s efforts won’t be put to waste. Jay never left her through the journey to their dreams. But there’s still something that Terri needs to overcome. It’s her fear of light rays. She’s still suffering a trauma. It’s essential for her to overcome her trauma, for in order to perform on stage, lights are dawned on you! She couldn’t perform unless she overcome her weaknesses. In lined with this, there is a competition on campus and her professor is expecting the both of them, Terri and Jay, to join the competition. She feared that her weakness would lead them to failure, so she decided not to participate. However, Jay insisted that he’ll help her get over her trauma and let go of her guilt. Thinking of her brother again, she joined the competition with Jay and hoped that her brother will help her win the race. They rehearsed too hard and prepared for the competition. Then came the competition, everyone is furious about it, even her parents who’s aware of Terri’s fright of lights. They fear that she might freak out or collapse whenever that happens. But they are somewhat believing that she can do it and that Paul will help her in his own ways. And miracles  happened. When Terri and Jay’s turn came, lights were already dawned on them. She felt the trauma again and was frightened, she couldn’t sing. But suddenly, she saw her brother, smiling at him from the lights, cheering her up and let her know that he’s proud of her. The scenario lightened her feeling and took her trauma away. From then on, everything she do, she dedicates it to her brother, who first believed in her. And taught her how to raise her voice to the world!

A Pestle Analysis for Tesco

A PESTLE analysis for Tesco must consider all the important external factors impacting on the company. These factors may have political, economic, sociological, technological, legal or environmental dimensions. The political analysis must include the impact of local and national government, and the international situation. The Economic analysis needs to investigate the influences of the stock market and tax increases, amongst many other monetary matters. Sociological factors are difficult to suss out. We swim in the â€Å"water† of our culture without recognising it as an important determining factor. And sociological analysis is all about analysing the background culture. Technological factors are usually easier to spot, because new technologies involve change, and change is always noticed. For instance, online shopping has had a major impact on Tesco's recent success. The change created by technological advances often lead to legal problems, which is why legal analysis is always an important part of a PESTLE analysis. Tesco's operations obviously have a significant environmental impact, from fossil fuel use to packaging issues. Reducing the demand on the planet is a challenge for any big company. A PESTLE Analysis for Tesco must look at all the six factors we have mentioned. Here they are again, with examples of each: * political: an increase in unemployment due to a downward turn in the world economy. * economic: impact on sales of the credit crunch. sociological: an increase in immigration from Eastern Europe resulting in a demand for new goods. * technological: how can Tesco take full advantage of the world wide web? * legal: how can Tesco avoid legal opposition to expanding into new high streets * environmental: – climate change is affecting supply and transport, how can Tesco adapt? In summary, any PESTLE Analysis for Tesco must consider all external factors

Making Choices English Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Making Choices English - Essay Example Here I am happy with him and make the most of every moment as I have made perfect choices of time without chances for regrets. In this new life, it is still a lot of hard work that makes me cope up with the conditions and requirements of the city life. The culture and trendy life styles of American people inspires me a lot to work out plans for the betterment of my life here. My early life itself had taught me enough lessons to choose wisely and that may be the reason why I manage to live better; and that may be the reason why I chose to come to America and get married to the man I loved. I know the fact that for many people, life teaches lessons of life with severe experimental exposure to hard and bitter experiences. As you complete one of your courses of your studies, you feel potentially able to handle the situations related to the subject. However, there is another thing you will love to learn either for excellence or for mere enthusiasm. The process of choosing something goes o n everlasting as long as we are to live on, yet some of them are very important in our life. I may case, the choice to live in America is the most important one I have taken so far. There was a time when I feared the dreads of migrating to a new country in search of opportunities to support my studies and find a job to happily move on my life. From the conservatory life I used to live in my community, it was always a dream to live in this land of opportunities. Most of my classmates preferred to study in the Philippines itself who did not think beyond their limitations to travel abroad. Sometimes I felt I should follow their path and continue my higher studies there and settle my life doing some job locally obtained. As I remember those day now, and when I compare my present life with the past days, I remember the quote â€Å"I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference† from the famous poem ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost. It was a ll very important for me to take one way from those left before me; and I chose the rare one – travel beyond the seas in search of a beautiful life. The confidence of a moment I had brought me up until this day; and I am sure, I have made the correct choice as I have a happy life now with all the grace of the job I do now alongside my studies. It was a tough choice, of course, since I was confused as the poet says, â€Å"Oh, I marked the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads to way I doubted If I should ever come back† (Frost). Every beginner feels puzzled at a condition when he needs to take a path to move on and the confusion remains dreadful till certain point of consistency. In my personal experience, I had no option other than to choose a job to earn the bread; therefore, I decided to I am proud to say I have fallen out well and met the challenges of my life which I would have had if I had continued to live in my home country. When it comes to my job an d the management of time I need to apply for maintaining the smoothness of the family life, I really need to work hard. Meeting the needs of a happy life in America demands much of you sweat; most of the time, you forget your hunger in the rush for punctuality, but it is rewarding to be busy in a city. The basic element of living in a city far away from your homeland with a different culture is always associated with our meritorious effort for excellence at work field. One will have to ignore values and self-made principles to some extend

Brand makrketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Brand makrketing - Essay Example The primary goal of brand positioning is to build a strong and longer-lasting relationship between the brand and buyer. With so many brands out there competing for consumer's attention, this takes some doing indeed. This makes brand positioning an unenviable exercise of communicating in an "over-communicated" society, whose objective is to let your stand out in the din of marketing activities. You may have an excellent product in your hands, manufactured in the most innovative process, but this does not guarantee success in the present-day market where image and symbols are more important than process, product quality or need. The symbolic meanings of brand include prestige, status and personality. For a company to develop its brand positioning effectively, it must project an image that has these symbolic meanings of brand. A brand is made up of the name, logo and other visual elements like images, fonts, color schemes, and symbols. All these are part of brand image, a symbolic construct created within the minds of people, which consists of all the information and expectations associated with a product or service. In developing a brand positioning strategy, the logical first step is visibility. The organization needs to give its brand maximum visibility and this entails a lot of expense and effort, such that brand positioning is not for top management and CEOs who are overly concerned with costs. While making the brand visible, there are 6 suggested strategies of brand positioning that the company can take up: 1. Link the brand to a particular need. The brand should be presented as an answer to a consumer need that has not been adequately served by existing brands. 2. Associate the brand with a pleasant mood. People want escape from the stresses of modern living, so any brand that evokes ugly and unpleasant moods is likely to rate low in consumer preferences. 3. Make the brand appeal to subconscious motives. Marketing techniques that are indirect and subtle make people think, contrary to those that are too simple and direct. 4. Condition the consumers' mind to prefer the brand through a reward system. A reward system may come in the form of giveaways, taste tests and similar promotional activities. 5. Provide attractive models for consumers to emulate. The company may sign up movie stars and beauty queens as its brand icons for such brands as personal care products, who will endorse the brand in all its ads. For consumer brands targeting men, high-profile athletes are appropriate as brand icons. 6. Break through the known perceptual and cognitive barriers to consumer preference. These barriers may have something to do with culture, such that a product designed for Western consumers will have little appeal to Asians. 2. Brand Personality Question: How can a cereal manufacturer use the brand personalitytheories to solve a problem regarding a new brand of breakfast cerealit has developed that it wants to give a brand personality distinct from its other cereal products The

The Justice System Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The Justice System - Research Paper Example This generally helps in creating a peaceful society as the people are ensured of justice. Premised on this fact, disputes in a society are settled in an amicable manner thus reducing the conflicts that might arise. Without the criminal and civil courts it’s impossible for the justice system to operate as the need for a body to resolve issues is part and parcel of the justice system. The civil and criminal courts form the judicial system that ensures citizens of any country live safely as well as in a civilized manner. A society cannot do without a judicial system that ensures justice is done. Criminal courts Criminal courts form part of the judicial system that seeks to enforce justice in a society. The idea of criminal courts came about due to the need for an institution to enforce the criminal laws coded in the different states of various countries. Some acts and omissions have been criminalized under the Tennessee Criminal Code and as such the Tennessee criminal courts are institutions that ensure that the criminal justice system is enforced as provided in the law. The criminal courts came about to regulate alleged, potential and actual criminal activities within the limits that have been put in place by the law so as to protect the citizen of a particular country from the wrongful treatment as well as protection from wrongful conviction. The two main reasons why the criminal courts exists is, thus, to first ensure that people are protected from harm of any wrong doer. Secondly, to ensure that the alleged wrong doers are not convicted for a wrong they did not commit (Brown 65). Therefore, the criminal courts serve justice to the victim of the wrong doing as well as to the wrongdoer himself. In many countries it is wrong for citizens to take the law into their hands. For example mob justice is an example of a situation where citizen take the law into their hands and decide on the punishment of the wrong doer. The criminal courts are put in place to avo id such situation where fairness and justice are not seen to be done. Many a time the alleged wrong doer might not be guilty and as such it is important to determine his or her guilt in a free and fair manner through a fair trial and hearing. I addition to giving the alleged wrong doer a fair trial the criminal courts came about to give justice to the person who has suffered harm as a result of the wrong doing. Thus the criminal courts have to balance the interests of both parties of the wrong doing and ensure that justice is done. The idea of criminal courts also came about so as to determine the exact punishment of a guilty person. Every criminal act is known as an offence and various countries have provided for it in their status. Further for every offence provided the there is a punishment and in most cases the punishment provides for a fine not exceeding a particular amount or for a jail sentence not exceeding a particular number of years. This means that there is need to be a system that determines the specific amount of fine or number of years for a jail term. An example is where the Criminal Code of Tennessee provides that a person who commits Class A felony is to be jailed for a term not less than (15) years or more than sixty (60) years imprisonment. In addition to this, the code further provided that the jury may assess a fine not to exceed fifty thousand dollars ($50,000). In such a case there is need for a criminal court which determines the gravity

International business and International Trade Coursework

International business and International Trade - Coursework Example The competition is increased globally since companies look for the best suppliers offering high quality at low prices, search for international human talents and acquire the best possible know-how in order to satisfy better their customers' needs. As a result of the above mentioned the cooperation of countries is expanded. The countries understood that may gain reciprocal advantages, they can react to problems better when they work together with other countries rather than trying to solve the problems alone. Lastly, the countries with globalization main deal with issues e.g. environmental issues that are not in their territory. 2. After summarizing the positive and negative aspects of offshoring, state whether you support or are against offshoring and why. Include any experiences you or someone you know has had in which offshoring is affected. "improvements in technology will have as a result the need for fewer employees to accomplish the same task/work, particularly for the less ski lled jobs that are easiest to offshore". (Hackos, 2004). The technology improvements will help companies to reduce their costs and thus reduce prices or invest the saved money in Research and Development. As a result, companies will grow and therefore will raise their employment rate and at the same time, they will increase highly paid positions in their countries. Another positive aspect of offshoring is that the poverty level in poor countries has been decreased. This allowed them to decrease their unemployment rate and consequently, people have more income to dispose of thus imports from rich countries have been increased i.e. the decrease of the poverty level in poor countries is beneficial both for the poor and the rich countries. The negative aspects are the following: the product prices are not reduced although the production costs are diminished. Jobs are replaced and working conditions are deteriorated. Jobs in poor countries are low paid. When a country asks for more then the Multinational Companies move to somewhere else, somewhere cheaper. Countries that have benefited from offshoring are China and India whereas the rest of the other underdeveloped countries remain in poverty. According to Joseph Stiglitz, during the last yeast of the last century, the number of people living in poverty conditions has increased by 100 million.(Daniels, Radebaugh & Sullivan, 2007) A personal experience that I have is a person I know in Greece. He had been working for the local cotton industry which was blooming in the country fifteen years ago producing excellent cotton.

History and Development of Programming Languages

History and Development of Programming Languages Yash Ojha Introduction Programming languages play the most important role in the creation of various  Software’s. Application, and Webpages etc. Just because of the existence of programming languages today everything related to New Technology is possible. For example the various Social Networking sites that we use is a result of Programming Language, the Mobile phones that we use in our daily life is a brilliant outcome of programming as every IC in the circuit of the mobile phones are programmed due to which it works. The most important outcome of Programming Language is the creation of Operating Systems (OS). OS is something without which we cannot use our PC’s or Laptop’s or even our mobile phones. OS acts as a base for every single function of a device to work in short it provides an important platform for the working. If no programming languages were introduced then today it nearly impossible for the people to use computers, mobile phones, servers, and various other things. But thanks to the developers of the various types of Languages that made peoples life very easy and mobile. 1 All about JAVA! Java was developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems in 1992 and was officially  released in 1995. JAVA Technology is a programming language that is used for meeting  the objectives of current challenges and opportunities in the present computing realm. Java Virtual Machine (JVM): JVM is an Interpreter for JAVA programming language,   i.e., it is the only way to convert a Byte Code into machine language. The Byte Code  cannot be converted using any technique other than the JVM. Therefore as I said above Byte Code somehow helps Java in being secure. Java Runtime Environment (JRE): We all know that that the major problem with the programming languages before JAVA was platform dependency i.e., if we want to run the code compiled in Windows Xp in Linux, this was not possible as for that we need a special compiler which works in Linux only. So to solve this problem JRE was launched and became a part of java. Every Operating System have some mandatory files that are needed to run java on that particular OS. So in short JRE in the collection of all those mandatory files needed to run java on various OS’s plus JVM. Due to JRE today it is possible to use the code written in some OS in any other OS. So JRE made JAVA completely PLATFORM INDEPENDENT. The byte code is loaded into JVM using the Class Loader. JIT (Just in Time): JIT works as a verifier. It verifies the Byte Code first whether it is infected or not or whether it is holding some kind of virus in it or not. If found clean it forwards the Byte Code to the JVM for further process. JIT is completely responsible for the SECURITY of JAVA. Let’s see the whole process graphically. A.java A.class 2 Now I’ll show you a basic program in java with its output. class Sample { public static void main(Strings) { System.out.println(Hello World); } } Let’s talk about the main() function. The main function is made up of 5 things. Access Specifier Function Name public static void main() Parentheses Access Modifier Return Type Java Fundamentals All programming languages have its own syntax and reserved keywords. JAVA also  has these kind of language fundamentals.   Basic fundamentals of java includes: Java Keywords Data Types Legal and Illegal Identifiers Operators Let’s see every fundamental in detail. Java Keywords: Keywords are the words that convey special meaning to the language compiler. These are reserved for special purposes and must not be used as normal identifier names. Data Types: Data types are keywords are means to identify the type of data and how much memory a variable needs to carry out a particular operation. Data types are divided into two types: Primitive Data Types (8 types) Non Primitive Data Types (User Defined 3 types) Legal and Illegal Identifiers: Identifiers are building blocks of a program and are used as the general terminology for the names given to different parts of the program viz. variables, objects, classes, function, arrays etc. 3 Operators: The operations being carried out are represented by operators. The operations (specific tasks) are represented by operators and the objects of the operation are referred as operands Classes in JAVA Class is a collection of objects of similar types of objects. Objects are nothing but a buffer or an area and are defined by something which have some property and behaviour. In java objects are created in the HEAP Memory inside the Java Virtual Machine. Syntax for creating an object in java: Class name object name=new class name(); new is a keyword of java which when used creates an object in the HEAP. Now whenever we use the new keyword a space in created in the HEAP memory inside the JVM for the object at runtime. When we print the reference variable of some class then it prints 3 things: Class name â€Å"@† symbol Hash code Graphical representation of HEAP and other memory areas available inside the JVM. 4 Principal of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) The object oriented programming has been developed with a view to overcome the draw backs of conventional programming approaches. The OOP approach is based on certain concepts that helps it to attain its goal of overcoming the drawbacks of conventional programming approaches. There are 4 general concepts of OOP: Polymorphism Inheritance Abstraction Encapsulation (it’s a part of abstraction) Polymorphism: It is the ability for a message or data to be processed in more than one form or it can simply be defined as one name used for many tasks which is used to speed up the compilation time. Inheritance: This is a parent-child relationship between two classes. In this, the child class object inherits some properties of the parent class object. Abstraction Abstraction refers to the act of representing essential features without including the background details or explanations. Abstraction is divided into two parts: Abstract Class: Abstract class is used to define a rule. Rules in abstract class: All the task which we can perform in a normal java class can also be performed in an abstract class. In abstract class we can define normal method as well as abstract methods. It is not compulsory to have at least one abstract method in a class. If a method is abstract then the class should be abstract. We cannot instantiate (cannot create the object) of abstract class. Abstraction is achieved using extends keyword. Interfaces: Interface are pure abstract methods. A class implements an interface, thus inheriting the abstract methods of an interface. An interface contains the behaviour that the class implements. The class that implements interface is abstract. Syntax: interface my; { declaration of methods;} 5 Rules in Interface: We cannot instantiate of an interface. Interface are used to define the rules purely. All the methods of an interface are by default public and abstract. In case of interface we use the keyword implements. If we define any data member inside an interface than by default it becomes static and final. Interface is used to achieve Multiple Inheritance. Packages Packages is a collection of classes and interfaces. No class can exist without a package included in it. This is the rule of OOP’s. But when we open a class we don’t always make a package in that class, so in this case the rule of OOP’s is violated. So to avoid this problem JAVA has given a feature in its compiler due to which when we compile the program, the compiler automatically creates a package of the respective class during the compile time. Command to compile the program with a package: javac –d . p.java Name of the project current directory is the same location as the class where the package is to be made. Destination. –d . is called the switching tool. Program with a package can be executed by using the Command: Java . Exception Handling When any abnormal condition that comes in a code which can be handled then that situation is known as Exception Handling. For every exception there are exception classes and exception methods to handle that exception in java by default. We can easily handle these unwanted exceptions by using try and catch block. Try is used to detect exceptions in a program and catch is used to handle that The â€Å"finally† block: If an exception occurs in a program then the try and catch block will be executed and then the program terminates in normal condition. But in case of finally before the termination of program finally block also executes. Syntax: try{-} catch{-} finally{-} 6 Threads Every process is divided into two categories: Heavy Weight Processes Light Weight Processes Heavy Weight Processes: These processes are those processes which stores a separate area in RAM. Light Weight Processes: These processes are those processes which occupy memory under the heavy weight processes. These light weight processes which occupy memory under the heavy weight processes are known as Threads in JAVA. Basically there are two ways in which we can make a thread: By directly implementing the runnable interface. By internally implementing the thread class in interface runnable and extending thread class. Multithreading Every part of a program is called a thread and every thread defines a separate path   of execution. Java provides a building support for multithreading program. The multithreaded  program contains two or more parts that execute concurrently. Priority of which thread will start working first is decided by a program named as Thread   Scheduler which is a program of the Operating System. It gives the priority randomly. Synchronization To avoid the corruption of data we use the concept of synchronization in threads. When we share a single object into multiple threads then the chance of data  Corruption arises and to avoid this we need the concept of synchronization. The keyword synchronized is applied on the function where the variables are  assigned values. Due to the concept of synchronization only one thread  executes at a time. Input/Output Stream Streams are nothing but a special type of buffer. In terms of JAVA streams are flow of bytes. Benefits of I/O Stream: Execution time reduces. Performance Enhances. Network congestion chances reduces. We get bulk data at a time. Streams are divided into two types: High Level Stream Low Level Stream High level stream cannot be used alone, whenever we want to use a high level stream we have to connect it by a low level stream. Stream Byte Stream Character Stream Console Based Unicode Input Output Reader Writer Stream Stream Byte Stream Input Stream Output Stream FileInputStream FileOutputStream BufferedInputStream BufferedOutputStream DataInputStream DataOutputStream ObjectInputStream ObjectOutputStream ByteArrayInputStream ByteArrayOutputStream PipedInputStream PipedOutputStream 8 Character Stream ` Reader Writer File Reader File Writer Buffered Reader Buffered Writer import java.io.*; class Demo0 { public static void main(String args[]) { FileOutputStream fout=new FileOutputStream(â€Å"a.txt†); PrintStream ps=new PrintStream(fout); ps.println(â€Å"hello†); ps.println(â€Å"hey†); System.setOut(ps); System.out.println(â€Å"m†); } } This is a sample program of how to write a file by coding in JAVA. Serialization Serialization is the process using which we can convert an object into a stream. If we have to use an object only once and then we need to use the same object after a long time then we use the concept of serialization. Features of Serialization: Only the object of that class can persist which implements serializable interface. If the parent class implements serializable interface then there is no need for child class to implement serializable. In case of serialization transient data members cannot persist. In case of serialization static data members cannot persist. Only the non-static data members can persist. If we make any variable transient that means those variables are unwanted now and will  get no memory in the HEAP inside the JVM. Serializable interface is a type of marker interface. Marker interface are those interface  which have no methods.

Physician- Assisted Suicide Essay -- Essays Papers

Physician- Assisted Suicide What can be more personal than the decision to end one's life in its final, painful days? Physician-assisted suicide is a justifiable suicide; â€Å"self-deliverance† and a person's liberty should not be taken away. On September 15, 2001 my negative attitude toward physician-assisted suicide changed drastically. My mother's parents are deeply in love and unfortunately have become very sick. My grandma was just diagnosed with Lou Gherig's disease one year before her death. My grandpa was always depressed because my grandma was in so much pain and was miserable. She was such a loving person and my mom was upset. When my grandma researched her illness, Lou Gherig's disease she realized that she would eventually be like a vegetable. Crying softly she looked up at our whole family and said, "Please I want to have PAS as soon as I get to "that" point in my illness. I love you all so much and don't want you to watch me die like that or spend a lot of money for som ething that cannot be helped." My grandpa loved her more than anyone can love a person and visited her in the hospital everyday. She was to "that" point in her life now and he was scared. Physician-assisted suicide is a justifiable self-deliverance because it helps those in pain avoid dying miserably. No person wants to live in pain or die in pain and PAS gives patients the mercy of dying painlessly. According to Kim, PAS allows patients a speedy death in peace and dignity (170). The author asserts that for many patients the pain they endure is too much to bear. Forcing people to suffer is immoral (Kim 171). No person that is terminally ill should want to suffer or allow their family members to watch them suffer. ... ...ainlessly than suffer. Physician-assisted suicide is a justifiable "self deliverance" because it helps those in pain avoid dying miserably. Works Cited Hawkins, Gail N., ed. Physician- Assisted Suicide. The Tension between Beauty and Virtue in Shakespeares Sonnet 95 Essay

The Tension between Beauty and Virtue in Shakespeare's Sonnet 95      Ã‚   "Sonnet 95" of Shakespeare's "blond young man" sonnets depicts a tension-filled variation on the classic blazon. The poet seems torn between the "shame" (1) that taints his subject and the "sweets" (4) of the subject 's beauty. The initial imagery of a "canker" (2) within a "rose" (2) serves to set up the sexual overtones that dominate the poem, as well as to create the sense of strain between disapproval and attraction that heightens throughout each quatrain. Shakespeare develops this imagery to ensnare the subject in an increasingly agitated opposition between his physical beauty and his behavioral repulsiveness. Though the poet claims that he "cannot dispraise but in a kind of praise" (7), the closing couplet goes counter this, bringing the sense of antagonism between the poet 's admiration and his disapproval full circle. The couplet serves as a warning that the physical beauty and virility that have dominated the young man 's life will end, destroying the " mansion" (9) where he hid his moral failing through the quatrains.    The opening quatrain of Sonnet 95 serves to expose the contrast between the young man 's physical and moral states. This quatrain, despite permitting the young man 's "beauty" (3) to dominate the sense of his "sins" (4), also begins to assert the idea that he will suffer for his vice. The opening image of "How sweet and lovely" (1) dominates the completion of the thought "dost thou make the shame" (1) through both rhythm and diction. While Shakespeare sets the opening in perfect iambic rhythm, the insertion of a pyrrhic foot to begin the statement of the young man 's "shame" (1) weakens the idea, allo... ...s to force the idea that there is a danger in the previously stated opposition. However, the phallic imagery of the "large privilege" (11) of which the young man should be aware helps to complete the poem 's consideration of physical beauty in place of virtue by drawing the poem back to the sexual overtones set up in the beginning. The warning that "the hardest knife ill-used doth lose his edge" (12) forces the idea that age leads to physical impotence, thereby leaving physical beauty the transient domain of the young, and virtue the permanent domain of all.    Work Cited The Norton Anthology of English Literature. Baroque Art Essay

It’s hard to make a distinction in which the beginning of the Baroque period is clearly distinguished from that of the late Renaissance. Nonetheless, Baroque art is emotional, decorative and a direct result of the Counter-Reformation movement in Europe. During the Baroque period, there was a dramatic religious split in the Church with the formation of Protestantism. Catholics reacted with the Counter-Reformation to revitalize Catholicism. They needed to attract viewers with religious art that more significantly impacted onlookers. Protestant areas (in the North) responded with a lack of religious art, concentrating, for example, on genre paintings that taught their viewers moral lessons. Compositions tended to have more open space. The Baroque style originated in Italy and spread north, profoundly affecting the rest of Europe as it spread. In his survey of art history text, Gardner’s Art Through the Ages: A Global History, Fred S. Kleiner asserts that the term Baroque is â€Å"problematic† because the era encompasses a broad range of genres and styles. At the same time, it is effective in describing the art of the 17th century, a style marked by dynamism and movement, drama and greatness. Since the masses could not read, there could be no better way to feed them religion-Catholicism’s particular view of it-than through grand pictures depicting Biblical lessons and the dominance of Catholicism, figured the Church. One of the most interesting examples of art as propaganda for the Catholic Church is Caravaggio’s Conversion of Saint Paul, painted ca. 1603. In 1600, Caravaggio was commissioned to paint two pictures. One is Crucifixion of Saint Peter, a dramatic and unconventional work. The other is Paul’s Conversion, which hangs across the chapel from Saint Peter in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. Also known as Conversion on the Way to Damascus or The Road to Damascus, this depiction of Paul’s conversion is known as the most intriguing of the two paintings. In this grand picture Caravaggio portrays the moment described in the Bible, in the Book of Acts, when Paul (then Saul) falls to the ground in an epiphany from the Lord. The egocentric, Christian-hating Saul is on his way to Damascus, on a mission to witch-hunt Christians there. In Acts chapter 22, verses 6-7, Saul describes the moment: â€Å"About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me? ‘† This information is important to consider when studying Caravaggio’s representation of the event. Caravaggio, who, in his personal life, was known to have an erratic disposition and not long after painting this scene, he fled Rome after killing a man (Encyclopedia Britannica) clearly was a revolutionary in his art. In this scene’s it perhaps showed the mystery in the man that represents Caravaggio’s sarcasm, his sardonic version of Jesus, who, after all, is the one who knocked Saul senseless. If so, what is it that Caravaggio is secretly saying about Jesus? We will never know, but the possibility is at least entertaining. Summary While Baroque art arose out of an effort to manipulate the masses through propaganda tactics, it changed and evolved as it spread throughout Europe. Today, the style can be appreciated for its many accomplishments, everything from its realistic renderings to its grand drama and its larger-than-life grandeur. Baroque art has an intensity and immediacy not seen prior. The exquisite attention to detail and the realism of the style are part of what defines this age. Many masters emerged from this era, masters whose styles are widely varied and whose intentions were just as varied, and much can be learned from them and the legacies they left behind in their art, music, literature and architecture. Combined, these characteristics make the Baroque style one of the most compelling periods in the history of Western art.

Should changes be made to the regulations for foods, served in public schools?

Should changes be made to the regulations for foods, served in public schools? The topic selected is should changes be made to the regulations for foods which are served in public schools. This topic is selected because of two reasons, first, education is the base of development on each level, whether it is on individual level, social level, economic level, or at national level. The second reason is, Government has opened public schools to provide education at minimum or no cost to the students and they also provide free or lost cost meal to them to make sure that they get the minimum calories to have a healthy body and sound mind. But the food served is generally not of a quality standard and that is why we often come across some news or the other about the degraded food quality. So the topic was selected to know more about the same. Thesis statement: Food leads to healthy mind and body, healthy mind and body leads to education, Education leads to development. Which means ultimately a healthy food can lead to development. So it is very important to eat well. National school lunch program: It is a federally assisted program of meal being operated in either nonprofit private schools or public schools and residential child care centers. The purpose of this meal program is to provide a low-cost of free meal to the kids of schools so that they maintain a balanced nutritional diet along with study. This program was started under National School Lunch Act, which was duly signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. The three major characteristics of my audience are, first, they are a mass of people and a mass of people can lead to change in decisions; second, the current view on this topic and third is awareness. Now the question which needs to be answered is do we need a change? If the answer is yes, then the time is now. Free meal or low-cost meal does not mean a low quality or limited quality and quantity of food materials. If the nutrition is not reached up to minimum level also then what is the use of giving free or low-cost meals to the students. Scope of study: The scope of this study is to find out the meals menu served, the minimum nutrition it gives to the students, the changes which it might need etc. Research design: The research design which can be used in this project is exploratory research design and Descriptive research design. Exploratory reveals all the Who, What, When, Why and How of the topic and it defines the problem. Descriptive research design is that research which describes the problem and finds a solution. Mode of data collection: Survey can be the best mode of data collection. It will include a questionnaire and some personal interviews. This will give the primary data. For secondary data, we will have to find out the old surveys done on this topic. Internet can be the best place to find secondary data. Sample: The sample for this project can be the schools or the private organizations which opts for free meal or low-cost meal. The teachers, the students etc can be the sample. The sample size will depend upon the availability of time and money for this project. Data Analysis: The data got from the primary and secondary survey can be analyzed using different statical tools to come to a certain result. Conclusion: This project is about the research that should there be a change in the meal provided at public schools or of the non-profit private schools. As the meal provided is generally not at par with the standard of the food quality approved by nutritionists so it needs to be changes. The foods do not contain fresh fruits, green vegetables, pulses or right amount of any nutrition filled foods so it is required to change the menu as differently as it can be so that proper nutrition can be given.References: H. Professional and Personal Development Plan Essay

According to the experience in the ledge weekend, I finished self – exploring with the help of my team members as well as our mentor Brandy. By carefully reading my personal insights profile and putting outcomes in practice, I find out that it is helpful by offering detail leadership information and organized analysis of myself, which includes something I even have not realized before. All these information give precious guidance to me to improve myself becoming a better leader as well as a follower. Personal Style – As a â€Å"Green† person, I am proficient at alleviating the concerns of others and always consist trying and working hard in order to fulfill my sense of responsibility and obligation. Different from â€Å"Red† and â€Å"Yellow† people, I am low ley and would like to experience strong internal personal reaction rather than showing private feelings. I would like to do things in routine manner and is consistent on my work. Order means a lot to me, which is showed by always making plans and keeping everything organized. In other words, work and home structure affect me very much. My mother influenced me a lot on structure making since I was a young girl. She is an organized person who subsequently is very efficient both in home stuff and her work. She is stick to time and plan, as well as flexible when facing changes. Furthermore, I am also tolerant, open-minded, and adaptable, enjoying the present moment. Most of the time I am patient and always understand others and I am forgiveness to make time for people and their problems. I am very effective in specialized work and highly consistent in performance. Interacting with others – I am good at blending productivity with an interest in, and compassion for, the work force. I am capable of great devotion and loyalty to a valued person or cause. In most situations, I could bring harmony and goodwill to the whole team as well as make great contribution constructing a better team. Being as class monitor from a young age, I have huge experiences on how important it is to keep groups of people in harmony and construct a peaceful environment for better development of work and study. Decision-making – In work, I am always deeply committed whenever I choose to undertake a role or task. Compared to the results, I concern more on process. Usually I am good at finding out what we need at the moment and then deal with it – like an â€Å"effective observer†. My team members gave me this title during the Edge Weekend. According to the their  feedbacks, I am excellent at making calm and critical decision as well as comments in rush occasions while others shows panic or have conflicts. Although I am not a perfect vocal person, this feature does not prevent me making critical and incisive decisions and offering useful comments to help modify current incorrect working situation. This leadership competency also comes from my former leadership experience. When being responsible for scheming the high school anniversary celebration, I met similar problems facing internal team conflicts on different ideas. I realized that when groups of people are eager to express and force others to accept their ideas, it becomes more difficult for the whole team to come up with a comprehensive conclusion or path to follow without bias. By the several times’ practices and experience collecting, I consciously calm down to think carefully of everyone’s opinion objectively. Although it is hard to keep a reasonable mind during severely discussion, I could handle it very well now and get to the critical point easily when others are affected heavily by conflicts or the loss of direction. Vision for the leader I will become ï ¬What contributions will I make to an organization that builds my strengths and the organizational success? i.Self-confidence and influential ii.Can state significant views with clarity and forethought iii.Prefers flexibility and open mindedness  iv.Reliable, cohesive and identity – Commits to realistic goals, expresses through actions, supports others by being loyal, diplomatic and sincere v.Sensitive to Environment – Brings fun and light-heartedness to any environment vi.Tolerance for Sustainable Development – Be patient and forgiving ï ¬Why would anyone choose to follow me? Some leaders tend to distribute work to employees without considering carefully the capacity differs from person to person. However, I am the kind of leader who could utilize employees’ ability according to their strength and always be considerable, making them comfortable when working. Also, as the leader of employees, I commit to realistic goals and could state significant views with clarity and forethought. At the same time, I express myself not only vocally but also through actions, which makes employees feel reliable and motivated to construct trust. Furthermore, I am flexible and  open-minded to accept different ideas, which offer platform for employees to express their ideas. They feel being respected and have more motivation to improve and raise productivity. As a leader pay much attention on harmony, my efforts on making working environment comfortable and light-hearted may be welcomed by employees. Like what is said in the article Beyond Uncertainty, â€Å"A company is not an instrument; it is, or should be, a living and growing community.† No one will refuse to follow a leader who is effective using right strategy to mange, being mindful, reliable, open-minded and concern much on working performance as well as environment. ï ¬How will I impact the world from a leadership perspective? As such a leader, I would impact the world by making my team or company more likely to be a community, instead of just focus on economics or financial results. Thus the company’s lifespan may extend. – The Living Company. If all companies could understand leadership on this perspective, all of us will construct healthier companies so that have a better market. Gap Analysis and Professional Development Plan A.Identify gaps and development needs   According to my insights profile results and the concept of Emotional Intelligence, including Personal Competence and Social Competence in order to achieve my future vision, I still need to fulfill several gaps shown as below: ï ¬Self-confidence: A strong sense of one’s self-worth and capabilities; ï ¬Communication, share concerns and reservations bravely In order to become the leader in my future vision, the first thing to do is increasing self-confidence. In some occasions, I found it hard to demonstrate all my abilities and may be underestimated by others and also disappointed myself. Through the readings and feedback of my team members, I discovered that it is not because I am lack of certain ability to complete the task, but I do not hold the belief that I can certainly do it well. In other words, I am lack of courage to step forward a little bit further. ï ¬Developing others and be influential: Sensing others development needs and bolstering their abilities ï ¬Emotional awareness: recognizing one’s emotions and their effect These two sections relate to what we read in the past few weeks on moral leadership. â€Å"Moral leadership, by definition, cannot be  situational or contingent. †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ The ultimate in disrespect of individuals is to attempt to impose one’s will on them without regard for what they want or need and without consulting them. †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Thus treating people with respect is what moral leadership is about, and nothing could be harder.† It responses to my former future vision that being a considerable leader should not only pay attention on financial profit and performances, but also the awareness of employees. Furthermore, how to act is more important because the way you act could change their thoughts. To acquire moral leadership, I should practice more on how to treat others respectfully. ï ¬Innovation while decrease risks According to results of the Insight profile and Emotional Intelligence, I need to be braver to take risk through innovations. Although in The Living Company, the author points out that one of the four common features of long life span companies have is that â€Å"Long-lived companies were conservative in financing†, it is not wise either to be so frugal and do not take any challenge. In my opinion after reading materials, I think it is also important for me to learn how to balance between embracing challenges and decreasing risks. ï ¬Initiative: Readiness to act on opportunities, make quick or unprepared articulation ï ¬ Be more flexible, do not over-dependence on rules and procedures. In Week 6’s Oxford discussion, we talked about lots of critical questions about sustainable development. In the article of Value Creation: The Promise of Sustainable Development, the author points out we should balance among Economics, Social and Environment. To create sustainable strategy, we should follow four primary drivers of value creation: Margin improvement, Risk reduction, Growth enhancement and Capital efficiency. All these four aspects remind me how to achieve my future goal by being more flexible. The value creation is a comprehensive process, which needs not merely avoiding risks or losses. B.Development Plan B1: Clearly identified SLOT During the Edge Weekend, we discussed SLOT with each other and tried to analysis ourselves and others using this strategy. S – Strength, means we can use it to make a contribution to the team. Since everyone’s strengths  are different, we could construct a stronger team if we utilize them well. But before that, we need to do accurate self-evaluation in order to take advantage of our strengths. My main strengths, which are mentioned in my formula 2+2, are excellent summarizing skill and organized personality that enhance the whole team’s efficiency. L – Limitation, means nobody is perfect, everyone may face some problems no matter they are internal or external ones. Limitations come from personality or leadership. That’s why we need to explore ourselves and make plans to improve our leadership, and also combine together to help each other in the team. My limitations showed in the Edge Weekend are unvocal and being lack of consistency on own ideas when facing conflicts. O – Opportunity. T – Threat Like the SWOT model in Management, environment plays an important role in influencing our development. Facing opportunities, we should catch them in order to create value by improving our leadership. On the other hand, we should avoid threat. For me, the opportunities are everywhere since I am eager to try new things, all team members treat me very well and always would like to help me improving myself. The threat for me may be the foreign environment, which makes me feel hard to keep on the same page with other American students, since communication is very important for good leadership. Strengths and limitation are internal elements that affect our leadership development, while opportunity and treat are external elements. What we should do with them is shown as below in the form. Internal Elements External ElementsUse itImprove itOpportunity Supervise itEliminate itThreat StrengthLimitation B2: My goals clearly relate to SLOT In order to improve my leadership, I should make plans according to SLOT: Using my strengths of well organizing and opportunity of listening to team members’ opinions in order to become more sensitive to environment and reliable, cohesive and identity. Although I have limitations of unvocal and  not that idea-consistency, I can use my opportunity of my team members’ encouragement to become more self-confident and influential. Since I have the limitation of unvocal and the threat of unfamiliar environment, I should eliminate them by practice English more in order to state significant views with clarity and forethought. Although I have the strength of well organized and considerable, the threat I am facing is the changeable world that requires me to take more risks while not loose too much. Therefore I should learn to keep balance of these two sides in order to improve flexibility and open mindedness and tolerance for sustainable development. B3: SMART – 15 My leadership development goals do meet the SMART criteria, which include Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time bound. According to SLOT analysis, every goal could be achieved in one specific way: use, improve, supervise or eliminate. Most of them are measurable by collecting team members’ feedback. All those goals are achievable, although some goals such as balancing risk-taking and flexibility is hard to handle in the long run. All those goals and my internal as well as external elements are relevant. Only if they combine together could I do accurate analysis and make detail plan for the future. At last, all these goals could be achieved in time bound, if I keep following the above plan.

Evalutale the policies governemets may adopt to overcome market Essay

Evalutale the policies governemets may adopt to overcome market failures arising from the production and consumption of demerit goods - Essay Example Consumption of alcohol by teenagers also makes their parents incur huge medical expenses when the teenagers get sick. Demerit goods can be over consumed in a free market (Kohls 2003, p. 54). It is important to note that a factor that may lead to individual overconsumption is the lower cost of production because the costs are shared with third parties. People also consume more goods compared to what the society produces due lack of regulations that may restrict them. Overconsumption can be reduced with government interventions. For instance, the government can intervene using the market-based approaches such as taxes and subsidies (Owen 2004, p. 128). It can also intervene through command and control strategies such as regulations. Awareness programs and persuasion can also be used to reduce overconsumption and overproduction. The government may impose taxes on demerit goods in order to internalize the externalities caused by the goods. It may impose the taxes indirectly on the organizations. For example, a firm that releases pollutants in a river may be taxed. The tax imposed on such firms should be equal to the external costs incurred by third parties. The external costs incurred by the third party may include medical bills resulting from taking the polluted water from the river. This means that the harms caused by the pollutants produced by the firm are the externalities (Kazi 2008, p. 410). In order to tax such firms effectively, the government should ensure that the taxes imposed on the firms are equal to the harm. The process will discourage them from producing the pollutants because the cost of production for the company will increase (Grant & Vidler 2003, p. 76). In addition, firms will be hindered from producing large quantities of goods that harm the health of individuals. This will in turn help in reducing the quantity of demerit goods produced by the taxed

Patient Teaching plan Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Patient Teaching plan - Research Paper Example His current blood glucose level is 256mg/dl. Michael is scheduled for discharge tomorrow with a new insulin prescription. Assessment data indicating Learning Need Michael was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus) 3 years ago which has been controlled using Glucotrol (oral medication). It has been established that he is grossly inexperienced when it comes to the self-administration of insulin. His nursing diagnosis would therefore be: insufficient knowledge related to unfamiliarity with Insulin and ways in which to self-administer it, as indicated by patient requesting and verbalizing that someone teach him how to take insulin (Ackley & Ladwig, 2010). Objective of client teaching By the end of this teaching, the patient should be able to explain his diabetic medications, as well as describe the correct way of taking those medications. Assessment of the learner Michael is alert and oriented to time, place, person, and event. He is very frank, communicative and willing to share information pertaining to his personal life and health. He says that he never completed high school but received his GED recently. In the short time I shared with him, I saw him reading to his son, which is a sign that he is literate. In addition to this, he is very informed about his medical condition and monitors his blood glucose daily. Owing to his obesity, Michael needs a walker to move around and says that he tires quite easily. His knowledge concerning the self-administration of Insulin is zero but he is highly motivated to learn. This is shown by his verbal request that someone teach him the skill. Specific learning objectives 1. (Cognitive) patient will have the ability to able to state the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and what to do in each scenario. 2. (Affective) patient will have the ability to be able to state the advantages of maintaining healthy blood glucose levels and the significance of taking insulin in the prescribed manner. 3. (Psy chomotor) patient will demonstrate/show the ability to self-administer Insulin without any assistance/prompts. The teaching session is expected to last around 3 hours. The first hour will involve providing a brief outlook of what diabetes is and how to control it using insulin. I will begin with a basic outline of the pathophysiology of diabetes and the common signs and symptoms. I will then explain to Michael that when controlling his sickness his blood sugar can rise or drop. High blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) is brought about by eating a lot of food, consuming sugary foods, or by not following the prescribed methods of taking insulin. Hyperglycaemia is characterized by frequent urination, fatigue, thirst, dry mouth, blurry vision, and weight loss. If left untreated, it can lead to a coma (Urden, Stacy & Lough, 2006). When you experience hyperglycaemia, take insulin as prescribed and drink water. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is caused by taking a lot of insulin, skipping meals or eating little food. Signs of hypoglycemia include confusion, headache, anxiety, dizziness, shaking, faster heartbeat, slow or slurred speech, sweating, and blurred vision. In case of hypoglycemia, drink or eat something that contains fast-acting sugar. Examples include soda, honey, sugar, fruit juice, or candy bars (Aldridge,

La Noche Triste (the night of sorrows) Term Paper

La Noche Triste (the night of sorrows) - Term Paper Example Due to the fact that the Cortes letters to Charles V were the only written sources of information available then, the conquistador’s words were mostly credited as the truth. The description that the Spanish army was just victims of treachery committed by the Aztecs and that it fought bravely and wisely under the able leadership of Cortes were concepts that were widely considered as accurate. However, as an increasing number of historians came to explore further the details of La Noche Triste, it was soon found out that the letters sent by Cortes to the king of Spain may not be the most accurate source of information regarding the events that took place prior to it. One observation is that made by Jonathan Loesberg, who points out that that Cortes actually used a style of writing that puts him in position to influence instead of just obeying the king. In the letter Segunda Relacion, he used a style in which the king would develop support and sympathy for Cortes and his troops. This would naturally serve Cortes’s self-interests later. ... According to Inga Clendinnen in his book Aztecs: An Interpretation, â€Å"the traditional tale being too much in accord with European preferences to be easily surrendered, and the story the victors told continues to for truth.†2 To base the an analysis of an important historical event on the narratives of one man who happens to have a vested interest related to it would certainly produce inaccuracies that may be upheld as truths in the end. This is the reason why, in order to objectively appreciate such event, it is necessary to seek information from other sources as well. Cortes’s accounts are the bases of the theory that Spain intention of exploring the New World and colonizing it is to the introduce Christianity to pagan natives. Under such pretext, all actions Spaniards in the Caribbean as well as in the mainland of what is now known as Latin America were made with missionary work as the excuse. However, as mentioned earlier, Cortes has his own selfish intentions of gaining political power by getting the favor of the king as well as discovering gold for the crown and for himself. These alone are already powerful motivations that drove Cortes to lead his outnumbered but well-equipped army into the Mexican interior. Prior to this, Cortes had heard about the existence of a relatively advanced civilization among the natives. The city-state of Tenochtitlan was the seat of Aztec power in Mexico and its capture could mean the unquestionable dominance of Cortes’s army. The expedition towards Tenochtitlan proved to be productive for the small Spanish army. They met native tribes who happen to be enemies of the Aztecs, such as the Tlaxcaltecas and the people of Tliliuquitepec. Cortes treated these natives as friends although this was all according

Psychology Report - memory for text Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Psychology Report - memory for text - Essay Example Results showed that the group in which context was given before reading the passage had performed better in comprehension and recall than the two groups in which no difference on recall was found and that comprehension and recall is significantly correlated when context was given prior to the introduction of material. The procedure is really quite simple. Â  First, you arrange things into different groups depending on their makeup. Â  Of course, one pile may be sufficient depending on how much there is to do. Â  If you have to go somewhere else due to lack of facilities that is the next step, otherwise you are pretty well set. Â  It is important not to overdo any particular endeavor. Â  That is, it is better to do too few things at once than too many. Â  In the short run this may not seem important, but complications from doing too many can easily arise. Â  A mistake can be expensive as well. Â  The manipulation of the appropriate mechanisms should be self-explanatory, and we need not dwell on it here. Â  At first the whole procedure will seem complicated. Â  Soon, however, it will become just another facet of life. Â  It is difficult to foresee any end to this task in the immediate future, but then one never can tell. (Bransford & Johnston, 1972, p. 722.) Bransford and Johnston used this passage in their study of comprehension and recall. Two groups of subjects listened to the passage, and were asked to understand and remember it. Â  One group was made to listen to this passage right away while the second group was informed beforehand that the passage was about washing clothes. Â  Bransford and Johnston found that people in the second group were much better at understanding and remembering the passage than those in the first group. Â  The first group had no context in which to incorporate the passage; the second group could readily integrate it into their prior knowledge of washing clothes. Prior knowledge is a factor in

MGT422 Answer Questions Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

MGT422 Answer Questions - Assignment Example Also the release of prisoner number 8612 after he was deemed to have crazed, shows the stressful life of inmates and depression levels. Considering this was just an experiment and he was to be released after one and half days, the critically one can tell the level or amount of agony in the long run. First, stripping by prisoners, which is mostly by force or without the prisoner’s consent or option, is degrading and a violation to that extent. Despite the fact that the prisoner is on the wrong side of the law, stripping may cause untold trauma as everyone deserves privacy and psychologically this may bring other issues like strong revolt and defiance by the prisoner, all in violation of freedom or rights at the start. Delousing and shaving of the heads of the prisoners, as it is put by the guards or from the societal conception, inflicts much internal suffering to the prisoner or the military as they are viewed as dirty, and from the prisoner’s point of view, psychologic ally creates fear as he/she tries to figure out the place he is about to be incubated. Push-ups were aversive forms of punishment at first but this changed with time which shows the adaptation character of humans to a life without a choice. That is, at first they were punishment but since the prisoners did not have a choice, and violation or redress was followed by tougher punishments, they were forced to adapt to the push-up as they were done by everyone and doing them, averted one from extra punishments. Personally, if I were a prisoner, life could have been worse for me especially on the issue of confinement and minimal sensory stimulation. I would be stressed and disoriented and I think I could be the first prisoner to be released of crazing. Personally, I would have rejected the offers to show the prisoner solidarity since from the slides we see some prisoner taking long to adapt to the prison life, justified by the fact that we are not the same, and by rejecting the offers, I will save the â€Å"slow adapters† agony of further torture since the guards will perceive them as notorious or showing some revolt. Misperception of the guards being â€Å"bigger† than the prisoners is always there but here we are dealing with two different cases, the first of prisoners without rights and freedoms and that of the guards who had power and authority to even to torture them. The misperception is always based on the power, privileges and authority involved as body size may not necessarily matter. Their behavior was more controlled and channeled to an intended goal of finishing the study unlike on the case of civilian and police encounters. For instance, in the latter, the civilians show much revolt during arrest as they are not aware on the kind of suffering and conditions of these cubicles and also the fact that they don’t know how long they can take in there after conviction, tends to necessitate revolt from the start. To minimize bias in the stu dy, the choice of variables should be independent and non-discriminatory in that our case where the principle investigator assumed the role of a superintendent, he could control the simulation of the study to meet his personal expectations and also the choice of students as prisoners and guards, would affect the authenticity and independence of simulation as the relationships were more friendly

Publicly-listed companies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Publicly-listed companies - Essay Example Business organizations are formed and nurtured by individuals; therefore, the norms are a reflection of the character patterns of the proprietors. The acts of a defiant worker will result, depending on his/her target, lead to either productivity loss, sabotage property, show no respect for others or anti-social to colleagues. Out of the society’s desire to have and regulate ethical behaviors, jurisdictions have developed and enacted into law ethical guidelines that inform decisions. Unethical behaviors have been defined in federal law to include invasion of privacy, theft, embezzlement, fraud, price fixing and incomplete disclosures. All organizations are bound by the rules intended not only to punish, but to encourage companies to prevent violations (Zschietzschmann 25). There are three influences in ethical decision-making; intensity, moral development and ethical principles. Ethical intensity is the degree of concern people hold about ethical issues encompassing magnitude of consequences, social consensus, probability of effect, temporal immediacy, proximity of effect and concentration of effect. Ethical principles are a sum-total of long-term interests, personal virtue, religious injunctions, government regulations, utilitarian benefits, individual rights and distributive justice in guiding the process of decision-making. In enforcing and preserving ethical behavior, a company must have code of ethics that all employees must abide by whether inside or outside the workplace. The code of ethics informs, from the onset, how employees are hired to ensure that the employee personal interest conforms to that of the organization. Ethics are further transmitted through continuous training as the law is not static. When faced with an ethical issue to deci de, individual needs to identify the problem as a first step. The next step is to identify the extent of the effect it causes followed by why it came to happen. One has to explore the

International Financial Reporting Standards Assignment

International Financial Reporting Standards - Assignment Example The IASB is responsible for oversight of the IFRS. This agency was formed in 1973 under its former name International Accounting Standards (IAS). The IFRS were created in 2001 (Articlebase, 2008). The first nation to adopt the IFRS framework was the European Union. The countries of Europe adopted IFRS in 2005 (Moya, Perrramon, Constans, 2005). The biggest stock exchange in the European nation is the London Stock Exchange (LSE). All domestic companies must abide by IFRS and U.S. companies that want to list their stocks in the London Stock Exchange must convert their financial statements to IFRS. In U.S. GAAP the financial statements of all companies must follow a specific format, but under IFRS companies can utilize multiple formats for their financial statements. Despite the fact that the IFRS started in Europe, the goal of the IASB is for the IFRS to become the global standard in the accounting community. In a little over a decade the IFRS has penetrated a lot of nations worldwide a lready. There are 153 countries across the world that adopted IFRS which implies that nearly 75% of the world has currently gone through the process of implementing IFRS (Pwc, 2012). The United States is listed as one of the countries that have adopted IFRS, but in reality the U.S is still in a conceptual phase due to the fact the entire financial system of the U.S. is based on U.S. GAAP. It is going to be extremely difficult to convince the entire financial community that convergence into IFRS is in the best interest of the United States. U.S. GAAP is a more complex system that has been used for a longer time. One of the benefits of IFRS is its simplicity. A simpler accounting system can help companies reduce administrative expenses since accounting is a major function that requires a lot of resources. Some people in America have resistance to change because they believe that U.S. GAAP is a superior system that is better equipped to prevent material error and fraudulent activity. T he U.S. GAAP and the IFRS have the same function of recording the financial transactions of companies, but there are lots of differences between the ways financial information are reported in each framework. Under U.S GAAP the valuation of investments is done at the cost of the investment in order to comply with the historical cost principle. The historical cost principle states that all assets in the balance sheet must be recorded at purchase price of the acquisition (Investopedia, 2013). The profits or losses of the investments are only recognized in the accounting books if the investment is sold. In IFRS investments are recorded at fair market value. U.S. GAAP has more information and detail than IFRS. For instance under U.S. GAAP the consolidated financial statements demonstrate financial information regarding the subsidiaries of the company. The IFRS only reports financial activity of the parent company unless the parent company has control over the finances of the subsidiary. Another example of the descriptive nature of U.S GAAP is the policy of reporting detail information about the investments of the firm in the financial statements of the firm. IFRS excludes investment activity from the financial statements. The discrepancies between the two accounting frameworks create inequality in the financial markets because investors are not able to compare the financial statements of U.S. companies vs. foreign firms. In an ideal world everyone would use the

I can't believe that this was once a syllabus Assignment

I can't believe that this was once a syllabus - Assignment Example This particular curriculum design intended to evaluate the performance effectiveness in the educational system of America. Through his book, Ralph emphasized on the purpose of education in the life of children. Ralph focused on the factors such as what are the interests of the child, the problems he encountered in obtaining education through the traditional curriculum and the purpose of his study. Also to make the education system better, no particular source of information is adequate to provide a basis of wise and comprehensive decision. As Ralph suggested in his book, education system should be so formed that it would help to change the behavior of the people in the most righteous way. The feeling and thinking skills of the people influenced by the content derived from education was the key point highlighted in Ralph W Tyler’s principle. His basic principle was to understand learning of education and its effectiveness in the behavior of the people throughout the life (Tyler , 2013). Evaluation of Tyler’s Curriculum Tyler’s curriculum came into existence during his eight year study. The concentration point of the study was to understand whether students were actually getting educated through the learning delivered in the classes. While Ralph was working on his eight year study, he went to the Ohio State where the faculty wanted him to test the knowledge of the students. The instructor would give emphasis on taking tests, but Ralph suggested that tests would quantify the memorizing power of the student and not their understanding on the subject matter, which certainly became a major turning point in today’s contemporary education process. Ralph coined the term â€Å"Evaluation† to investigate the real leanings of the students through the education system (Tyler, 2013). The evaluation was to understand the effectiveness of education and learning on the people’s behavioral characteristics and their life in future. The une mployment rate in the organization was increasing due to the lack of learning in the specific subject matter. The curriculum theory of Ralph dealt with the real sense of understanding of education. The theory emphasized not on the dull sensing of meaning of the subject matter but focused on the inner meaning, emotions and continuous exploration of the study in the life of the student (Tyler, 2013). The curriculum theory also gave emphasis to few principles, which were required to be followed for a better education system. The principle of the curriculum was to explore the knowledge of the learning, the interest of the students in the given subject and most importantly, the purpose the child has in his mind regarding the study. It was observed through his curriculum theory that every student had different interests and hence, 30 schools were developed to try the new education system suggested by Ralph. The evaluation of students, were further suggested by Ralph, to be done by the rec ords of the performance of the students throughout. Appraisal system would be introduced every year to check the knowledge and to understand whether they are learning the expected skills, which would help them in future. The theory also stated that the evaluation of the people after completion of studies, which meant how the people are dealing in the real
